"The first Dirtballs" - SnakTak ORIGINS part 1

Dirtballs are a simple snack with a simple origin.

Back in fall semester 2017 I was helping with a bake sale at school to fundraise for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.

I wanted to make something simple and healthy, so I googled some recipes and found these 5-ingredient vegan oatmeal cookies on Minimalist Baker.

I had a blast making them and now it's one of my go-to recipes.

I didn't want to tell people, "Hey these are vegan oatmeal cookies made of dates oats, almonds and bananas", though. Too many words.

So I named the cookies Dirtballs because of their brown clumpy appearance and natural ingredients.

Asking passersby to try some Dirtballs was much more effective.

The bake sale went super well.

I think we raised a few hundred bucks, and the Dirtballs sold out first every time.

I don't remember when, but I eventually started wondering if Dirtballs could be an actual product.

The thought would stick with me all the way until I moved from San Jose, California up to Eugene, Oregon.

That's when the real fun started.
